How to Chrome a Lamp

Adding a chrome finish to an item such as a lamp can give it a fresh shine and improve its look. Professional chrome finishes sometimes involve a multi-step process that is difficult to emulate at home, but using a chrome spray paint can provide a similar effect at a fraction of the time and cost. You will need to choose a primer and paint designed for the type of surface you are painting, so check the label before you purchase any.

Things You'll Need

  • 100-grit sand paper
  • Tack cloth
  • Masking tape
  • Spray primer

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the surface to be painted. If the surface is shiny, rub it with the sand paper to scuff it up, then wipe it with tack cloth to remove any dust. The primer and paint will not adhere well to a shiny surface. Make sure to only rub the portion you intend to paint.

    • 2

Apply masking tape to any areas you do not wish to paint. Make sure all areas are covered, because overspray can be difficult to control.

    • 3

Cover the floor or table where you intend to spray the primer with newspaper before you paint. Choose a well-ventilated area to avoid breathing too many harmful fumes.

    • 4

Spray a layer of primer on the area you intend to paint. Use long, even strokes. Allow drying time based on the instructions on the label before adding the chrome paint.

    • 5

Spray a layer of chrome spray paint on the areas you previously primed. Use long, even strokes. It is better to add multiple layers of paint than to apply one thick layer. Allow drying time before adding extra layers, and consult the label for the correct amount of time.

Remove the masking tape once the paint is completely dry.
