DIY: Canopy With 3M Reflective Film

Light reflective value refers to how much light a surface or color will reflect and, conversely, how much it will absorb. The corollary implications of this value, expressed as a 0 to 100 percent LRV, are the tendency of that surface to absorb heat and the number of lumens required to light up a space. Several space-age materials have emerged recently that have enhanced LRV beyond previously assumed limits. One of these, 3M Reflective Film, has an LRV of 94 percent. Used as an attachment, edge highlighter or full-surface covering 3M Reflective Film can yield high-performance canopies for multiple uses.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the surface area of the canopy, covering or other application to be covered. Decide whether the application of reflective film is for light-reflective enhancement, as in low-light environments, or for total interior reflection such as an aquatic or grow-light canopy. Measure and note the total length of edges and areas.

    • 2

Use a tape measure and yellow marker to mark the length of pieces of 3M Reflective Film to be cut. For multiple length strips, write a number in yellow on each strip in the sequence of attachment.

    • 3

Use heavy scissors to cut the strips of film and lay them aside.

    • 4

Remove the structure or unit for fixed canopies or concave surfaces, and invert it on a work surface where its interior and exterior can be reached easily.

    • 5

Clean the surface of the aluminum, glass or other surface with acetone and cheesecloth. Use soap and water for soft or painted surfaces. For soft or fabric surfaces, such as parachutes, clean the surface with material-specific cleaners recommended by their manufacturers.

    • 6

Peel the backing strip off the piece of film and lay it onto the surface. Repeat as needed to apply all the pieces of film to the surface or canopy.

    • 7

Peel the surface protective material from the strips or sheets of film to reveal the reflective surface.
