DIY Mason Jar Light Fixtures

Mason jars evoke a feeling of country charm and may bring back memories of sipping cold lemonade on a summer night or digging into homemade jam. These jars have life beyond food storage and can create a decorative addition to a home. Instead of lining the shelves with old mason jars, make them into light fixtures that hang from the ceiling.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the lid from a mason jar. Place it onto a work surface, such as a table. Create a hole in the lid that’s approximately 1 inch in diameter by pounding a thick nail or chisel through the center. The hole must be large enough to accommodate the wire from the lamp kit by threading it through to test. Remove the wire and widen the hole if necessary.

    • 2

Thread the cord from a hanging lamp kit through the hole in the lid for the final time, pulling it through enough so that the top of the light socket touches the bottom of the lid. Screw a light bulb in place into the attached socket. Use a wattage that’s appropriate for your specific kit.

    • 3

Pick up the lid and Insert the light bulb into the mason jar. Screw the lid into place to complete one pendent light. Repeat the process for the number of pendant lights you wish to include in the fixture.

    • 4

Place a ceiling light plate between two blocks of wood for support. Drill one hole for each mason jar pendent light, spacing them evenly throughout the plate.

    • 5

Pull each cord from the mason jar pendant lights through a hole in the ceiling light plate. Vary the lengths by pulling some of the cords through more than others or keep them at the same length depending on your preferred look. Knot each cord on the top of the plate to keep them from falling through.
