DIY Punched Tin Chandelier

An old extra-large coffee can serves as a decorative chandelier with an uncomplicated tin punching technique. Spray paint the sturdy punched-tin chandelier any color, but it is dramatic in black and adds an elegant touch to a hallway or an outdoor porch or patio over an existing light bulb. Craft this punched-tin chandelier with your child, if he is over the age of 12, and then hang the finished product in his bedroom.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the label and the top of the coffee can with the can opener. File the cut edge smooth with the metal file. Fill the coffee can with water. Place the coffee can in the freezer and freeze for 24 hours.

    • 2

Draw a design on the craft paper. Decorate with a zigzag, diamond, square, or circle formation that is 14-inches long and 6-inches high. Tape the design to the outside of the frozen coffee can with the ice still inside.

    • 3

With the hammer, pound the penny nail lightly through the design. Position all nail punch marks evenly spaced apart.

    • 4

Pound three evenly spaced holes around the top edge of the coffee can, four and a half inches apart.

    • 5

Thaw the ice and pour out the water. Remove the bottom of the coffee can with the can opener and file the cut edge with the metal file.

    • 6

Spray the coffee can with spray paint on the inside and outside of the can. Let the paint dry for three hours.

    • 7

Cut three six-inch pieces of wire. Thread the wires through the top edge holes of the coffee can and twist the ends of the wires to make wire loops.

    • 8

Screw the cup hooks into the ceiling evenly spaced around the ceiling light bulb. Hook the wire loops of the chandelier into the cup hooks.
