Specifications for Hanging a Large Crystal Chandelier

A large crystal chandelier may create a bold and dramatic look. Before hanging the chandelier, you must look at the specifications, including the height of the chandelier in the room and its overall location. Hanging the light too low may result in head bumps, while placing it too high diffuses the light it releases and reduces its impact in the room.
  1. Table Issues

    • When picking a chandelier that hangs over a table, choose a chandelier with a width approximately half the width of the table's diameter. If the table has a 40-inch diameter, then you need a 20-inch-wide chandelier. For a 60-inch-wide table, a 30-inch chandelier is a better choice. The height or length of the chandelier should relate to the ceiling height in the room. For every 1 foot in height of the room, add 3 inches to the chandelier’s size. For example, in a 10-foot tall room, you need a chandelier that is 30 inches long. Hang the chandelier so the bottom is at least 30 inches from the top of the table.

    Entryway Chandeliers

    • Decorating Studio recommends adding the width and height of the room when picking a chandelier for an entryway. The number relates to the diameter of the lighting fixture. If the room measures 6-by-10 feet, add six to 10, which equals 16. For that space, you need a chandelier 16 inches in diameter.

    Considerations

    • Depending on the size of the room, you may need more than one chandelier. When you use two chandeliers in the same room, divide your dimensions in half. Two lighting fixtures of 16-inch diameter might overwhelm a small room, while one light of that size looks nice in the same room. Divide the 16-inch diameter in half and hang two fixtures 8 inches in diameter. Divide the dimensions in half if you hang two chandeliers above a larger or longer table.

    Tip

    • Cut a sheet of cardboard into the same width and length as the chandelier you want. Use the cardboard piece as a replica of the light and hold it above the table or from the ceiling. Make sure the size fits your needs, including how low it hangs from the ceiling and how its size fits in the room. If the fixture feels too small, install a slightly larger one.
