How to Drill Out Driftwood Lamps

Anyone who has ever lived seaside, or who simply likes Cape Cod styling, appreciates the look that a driftwood lamp provides. Driftwood lends itself to unusual coloring and shapes, providing an interesting core for a lamp. Drilling out the center of these pieces is necessary to string the power cord to the socket.

Instructions

    • 1

Drill straight through the driftwood's center longways. Drill as far as you can in one direction to ensure the line is straight and true.

    • 2

Feed the wire through the driftwood's core from the top toward the base. Pull the wire through the base and the hole at the base of the socket, leaving approximately 4 inches at the top.

    • 3

Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from the upper end of the cord. Separate the ends enough to reach to the two screws on the socket.

    • 4

Loosen the socket with the Phillips screwdriver. Slide the wires under the screws, making a small hook around the threads. Tighten the screws back down.

    • 5

Screw the threads on the base of the socket into the hole drilled for the cord in the top of the driftwood. Pull the excess cord from the base to allow for maximum length to the outlet.
