DIY Salt Lamp

Salt lamps are created by illuminating salt crystals with a low-watt light bulb. These light fixtures provide a relaxing atmosphere for any room and may cleanse the air of allergens or irritants. Salt lamps are available in a variety of sizes and styles in stores and online. They can also be created easily and inexpensively at home by inserting a lamp kit into a bowl of your choice and filling the bowl with salt crystals.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a bowl for your salt lamp. Sturdy options include glass and metal.

    • 2

Drill a hole in the side of the bowl large enough to thread the lamp cord through.

    • 3

Place the portion of the lamp cord containing the light bulb socket inside the bowl and thread the cord through the hole in the bowl’s side.

    • 4

Screw the light bulb into the socket. Low wattage bulbs, such as seven to 15 watts, are best for this project to avoid overheating.

    • 5

Plug in the lamp cord to make sure the bulb is working properly before adding salt.

    • 6

Pour the rock salt gently into the bowl until the bowl is full and the light bulb is completely covered.

    • 7

Turn on the salt lamp. Remove a small amount of salt or choose a bulb with a slightly higher wattage if the light does not shine through the salt as desired.
