How to Make an LED Chandelier

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) provide a lighting option that is both low-energy and low-heat. Such lights may last four times as long as a traditional, incandescent bulb, making them a friend of the environment and a prime choice for household lighting. Battery power is common among LED products due to their low power demands. Take advantage of this budget-friendly, battery-operated lighting source to create a chandelier that seems to float weightlessly in the air.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Inflate a latex balloon most of the way so that it retains a rounded shape. Tie the balloon.

    • 2

Begin wrapping bendable wire LED lights around the balloon. Wrap in many directions creating variety and create a large amount of coverage with the lights. Twist the beginning of the LED wire onto another section of wire. As you wrap, leave a gap near the top of the wire sphere that will be large enough to fit the battery pack. Be sure that no gaps exist at the bottom of the sphere that are equally as large, as the battery pack will rest inside the sphere and must not fall out.

    • 3

Repeat to form as many spheres as you desire. Use an odd number for an eye-catching arrangement and vary their sizes.

    • 4

Use a needle to pop the balloons. Turn the spheres over one by one -- as they will have retained their structure – and fish the popped balloons out of the holes you left in the tops. Insert the battery packs gently into the top holes and allow them to rest at the bottom of the wire spheres.

    • 5

Use fishing wire to invisibly hang your LED spheres. Insert fishing wire into the top of the sphere. Wrap it around several of the pieces of wire to anchor it, then poke it back out of the sphere and tie to secure. Attach to the fixture from which your chandelier will hang.
