How to Get Rid of Blobs of Lava at the Top of a Lava Lamp

Lava lamps have been around for decades and were a staple of the "psychedelic" subculture during the 1960s and 1970s. When turned on, colored wax floating inside of liquid heats up and forms globules that resemble lava. This is a cool effect, but sometimes smaller bits of wax can break off and stay at the top of the lamp, taking away from the pleasing aesthetic. There are ways to quickly fix this problem that don't involve taking the lamp apart.

     Unplug your lava lamp but don't wait for it to cool.

     Grip the body of the lamp with potholders and lift it off of the base. Put the lava lamp on an even surface.

   • 3

     Twist the top of the lamp in a circle, using the potholders. This will get the lava moving again and the blobs at the top should reconnect with the main form of wax.

   • 4

     Continue turning the lamp until all small blobs are gone.

   • 5

     Replace the lamp body on the base.
