How to Make Hanging Pending Lights From Bell Jars

Glass Ball jars have a long history and the jars you see today are very similar to the first designs sold. The jars can be used for home canning, storage, as candle holders and even as hanging lights. The finished lights have a traditional and down-home feel, suitable for parties, weddings and other special events. You can even use the pendant lights as in your kitchen, living room or porch.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the lid from the jar. Set the glass Bell jar to one side and turn the lid over. Find the exact center of the lid and mark the location with a pen or gently press the drill bit against the metal. Using the proper hole drilling bit, drill a hole large enough to fit the socket from the lamp kit through.

    • 2

Unscrew the ring from the light socket. Slip the end of the socket through the hole in the lid, making sure that the socket fits against the lid. Screw the ring back on the socket so the lid and socket are attached firmly together.

    • 3

Fill the bottom of the jar with decorative objects, if you want. A handful of wooden clothespins, a few pieces of plastic fruit or some dried flower petals work nicely. Use only the bottom few inches of the jar for decorative items.

    • 4

Screw the light bulb into the socket and attach the lid to the jar. Set the bottom of the jar on a flat surface, as it serves as the bottom of the pendant light. Shake the jar slightly, making sure that any decorative objects stay on the bottom of the jar and away from the light bulb.

Attach the mounting hardware from the lamp kit to the ceiling. Pick the spot where you want the hanging light and screw the hardware to the ceiling. Run the cord through the bracket on the hardware and suspend the light below. Plug the cord into the wall and repeat, making as many hanging lights as you need.
