Light Ideas for a Cathedral Ceiling in a Kitchen

A cathedral or vaulted ceiling in your kitchen can offer some lighting options that would not have the same effect with a suspension ceiling. When you have open space in the ceiling above the kitchen, you can use different forms of lighting to create atmosphere. You can also develop ways to highlight your kitchen work areas that will lower your energy bills while giving you the light you need to safely prepare food.
  1. Pendant Lighting

    • Pendant lighting works well with a vaulted ceiling because the light cannot reflect off the ceiling and can create more of an atmosphere. With a low suspended ceiling, the pendant lighting is less effective. You can hang as many pendant lights as you want, and place them only where you need them. They can be hung over the food preparation areas, the sink and the eating areas. the lights help to create an ambiance in your kitchen that is unique to cathedral ceilings.

    Indirect Lighting

    • Indirect lighting is lighting that is directed at the vaulted ceiling to be reflected back into the kitchen. Indirect lighting can either be recessed or track lighting installed around the perimeter of the ceiling. When you paint your ceiling a reflective lighter color and turn the indirect lighting on it, the light is distributed evenly and gives a warm and even glow to the entire kitchen.

    Skylight

    • A vaulted ceiling gives you the opportunity to take advantage of natural light and reduce your energy bills. A skylight installed directly over the sink and food preparation areas of your kitchen will work with your kitchen windows to provide you with all the light you need. During the daylight hours, you would not need to use natural lighting at all.

    Under-cabinet Lighting

    • Under-cabinet lighting can be very useful in creating adequate light in the work areas of your kitchen without having to turn on any large overhead lights. Under-cabinet lighting can be placed at strategic points throughout your kitchen and will work in conjunction with indirect lighting to maintain a soft ambiance to your kitchen's lighting design.
