How to Make Spaghetti Lamps

Fashions and trends of one generation seem to come full circle and become stylish, vintage looks in a future generation. One decorating trend has done just that. In the 1970s, many homes had string lampshades, called spaghetti lamps, hanging from the ceiling. If you want to add one to your home’s decor, make your own. Homemade spaghetti lamps are less expensive than store-bought or vintage versions and allow you to control the shape, size and color of the finished product.

Instructions

    • 1

Inflate a balloon. The shape and the size of the balloon will determine the finished shape and size of the spaghetti lamp. Tie the balloon off to secure it.

    • 2

Tie an 18-inch piece of string to the tied off balloon. Hang the balloon, using the other end of the string, from a ceiling fan or an eye hook inserted into the ceiling. Line the area below the hanging balloon with newspaper or trash bags to protect the flooring.

    • 3

Empty a container of wallpaper glue into a disposable container. Place skeins of cotton or acrylic string or colored yarn into the wallpaper glue. Use your fingers to work in the glue.

    • 4

Cover the surface of the balloon with petroleum jelly to make it easier to release the balloon from the string.

    • 5

Wrap the strings around the surface of the balloon. Use a random pattern, overlapping the string as you wrap. Leave a hole at the top of the balloon that measures 1/4 inch smaller than the lamp ring holder you want to use.

    • 6

Trim the end of the string once the balloon is covered. Place the loose end of the string under one of the overlapping pieces to secure it. Let the string dry overnight.

    • 7

Cut the end of the balloon to release the air. Remove the balloon from inside the string structure and let it dry another three to four hours.

    • 8

Place a lamp ring holder in the hole you left in the string. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to attach the lamp to an electrical hanging lamp fixture or stand lamp fixture.
