Turn your lava lamp off and allow it to cool if it has been running.
Remove the cap from the lamp's glass globe. Some caps has a screw-on top similar to that of a beverage bottle; others, however, are crimped on and must be carefully pried off. Insert a flat metal object, such as a butter knife or a pair of needle-nose pliers, and pry the cap's edges up, working your way evenly around the bottle. A multitool is ideal, as it offers several different tools to try.
Drip a few drops of food coloring into the liquid. If the liquid is clear, add food coloring that is the color you want the liquid to be. If the liquid is already colored, you must add a color that will blend with it to create the new color you want. For example, if the liquid is yellow and you want it to be green, add blue food coloring.
Put the cap back on. If it is a crimp cap, place the cap on, then crimp the edges back down using a pair of pliers.
Shake the globe gently to mix the food coloring. Place the globe onto the stand, then turn it on.
