Making Paper Mache Lamps

Paper lanterns have long been used to decorate inside and out. You can make your own with paper mache to save money and ensure it matches your decor and aesthetic. The finished lamp is a round lantern. Make several and hang them with a cord and lamp fitting for a festive mood. For a softer, more romantic atmosphere, use them as table-top lanterns by placing an LED candle inside each one. This craft is easy enough to do with children.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut your paper into thin strips.

    • 2

Mix a solution of half glue, half water in one of the small bowls.

    • 3

Blow up the balloon until it’s the size you want your lantern to be. Place the balloon in one of the small bowls, with the tied-off end pointing down. The bowl will act as a stand as you add your paper mache and let it dry.

    • 4

Use the paintbrush to paint a piece of tissue paper with the glue solution, stick the paper to the balloon. Continue working in this fashion until the balloon is covered, leaving an opening near the tied-off end of the balloon. This opening will be used to attach your cord or to insert your candle. Apply five or six coats of tissue paper, making sure the edges overlap.

    • 5

Let it dry for at least 12 hours.

    • 6

Pop the balloon and remove it from the lantern. If the lantern edges cave in, gently push them back out. Attach your lantern to your cord and lamp fitting, or add your LED candle to the bottom.
