DIY Drum Lampshades

When it comes to redecorating, even the smallest details can make or break the style of a room. But tending to every single characteristic in a room can quickly add up to exorbitant expenses. One way to save a considerable amount of your hard-earned cash on new light fixtures is to restyle your existing lampshades. With a few common craft supplies and a couple yards of fabric, you can turn your old drum lampshades into decorative originals on-the-cheap, and not have to replace brackets and fixtures.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the shade's height and circumference using a tape measure. On a perfect drum- or cylinder-shaped shade, you can measure it right around the middle. On a tapered, funnel-shaped lampshade, measure the edge of the widest end. For either shape, hold your tape measure in a straight, vertical position to measure the height of the shade. Write down your measurements.

Cut the fabric to accommodate the shade. Cut the width of the fabric to exceed the circumference of the shade by about 1 inch. Trim the height of the fabric to exceed the height of the shade by about 2 inches. Loosely wrap the fabric around the shade to check the measurements.

    • 3

Find a seam in the existing shade. Line up the horizontal end of the fabric vertically with the seam, leaving 1 inch of fabric overlapping the top and bottom of the lampshade. Apply a thin layer of glue to the seam, and evenly smooth the edge of the fabric over the glue. Use a slightly dampened sponge to remove any glue that seeps over the edge of the fabric. Allow to dry completely.

Wrap the length of fabric around the shade. When the glue is dry, securing the fabric to the seam, firmly pull the loose end to stretch it smoothly around the lampshade. Fold the edge of the loose end in about 1 inch, to conceal the frayed edges, and line it up evenly with the seam covering the previously attached edge of the fabric. Apply a thin line of glue over the seam and smooth the folded end over the glue. Allow the glue to dry.

Secure the top and bottom edges. With the fabric securely attached around the circumference of the lampshade, you should have 1 inch of fabric overlapping the top and bottom. Apply a thin layer of glue to the inner, top edge of the lampshade around the whole circumference. Fold the fabric in toward the glue about 1/2 inch to conceal frayed edges, and fold again to secure the top seam to your glue-line. Flip the lampshade over and repeat the process on the opposite end.

Add your desired trim. Use the fabric measurements to cut out any trim such as lace, ribbons, fringes or dangling beads. Use a thin layer of glue or make tiny dots with a hot glue gun to secure your adornments. Allow all glued areas to dry completely, usually within 24 hours, and install your lampshade on its corresponding light fixture.
