DIY Backlit Monitor

You may love watching your new television monitor in a dark room because it reminds you of watching movies at the cinema, but the eyestrain of the bright monitor can make the experience less enjoyable. You can fix the problem by placing back lights behind the monitor. This allows you to maintain depth perception of the monitor against the wall, lessening eyestrain. The lighting can also become a conversation piece if you move the television to another room.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a stud finder against the wall to locate a stud behind the drywall. This provides strength to the mounting of the laminate floorboards against the wall. Draw an outline along the wall where you plan to place the boards. Center the outline to any cable or wiring outlets for the mounting of the television monitor.

    • 2

Place hook screws into the wall. The hook screws should be large enough to hold up the string tube lighting but not scrape against the laminate boards you will affix to the wall. Place the tube lights on the hook screws so that they will be close to the edging of the laminate boards but won't be seen at any angle.

    • 3

Saw the 2-inch by 2-inch wooden boards into short lengths using the saber saw. Secure the wooden boards to the located wall studs with screws and the Phillips screwdriver. Place one wooden board near the cable lines to mount the television. Pull enough of the cable cord out to hook to the television.

    • 4

Build the laminate flooring on the ground in the dimensions to match the pencil-drawn outline on the wall. Put together one side to mount to the 2-inch by 2-inch boards on the right side. Leave an opening in the center for room to mount the television to the wooden board and cable lines.

    • 5

Apply glue to the laminate floorboards and snap them together. Allow the glue to dry. Mount the laminate floor to the wooden boards on the right with glue. Check the levelness of the laminate floor boards with the spirit level.

    • 6

Assemble the laminate flooring to mount on the left side. Allow it to dry as you secure the television to the wooden board in the middle with screws. Hook up the cable lines to the television. Place the dry laminate floorboards to the left side as you glue it to the 2-inch by 2-inch wooden boards, snapping the left floorboard section together to the right floorboard section.

Apply masking tape along the glued seam to keep the pieces together to dry. Once dry, remove the tape to enjoy your backlit monitor and wall accent.
