How to Make a Wicker Chandelier

Wicker is a material readily available in most hobby and craft stores or at farming good stores. Although traditionally it is used to make baskets or storage containers, it is a diverse material that can be used to create a variety of household goods. For chandeliers, a raffia or reed-type wicker should be used, as they are lighter and will therefore be easier to hang. Reed is softer and more flexible, so use raffia if you want something more durable. Beginner weavers should use reed wicker, as it is easier to handle.

Instructions

    • 1

Place three long wicker strips on a flat surface. Take another three long wicker strips and weave them between the original three strips. Weave then freely, ensuring that there is a 1-inch square left in the center. This will be used to feed your light through.

    • 2

Use cloth pegs to bend the corners of the chandelier. Bend the wicker into a pattern, turning one up and then turning one down. Repeat this pattern all along the side of the chandelier. Select the central piece of wicker and, using the scissors, cut it down the center. Weave this piece of wicker in and out of the other strips and then tuck inside the base. Repeat this process until you have 3/4 inches remaining at the top of the woven wicker.

    • 3

Use the scissors to trim the wicker to make all the edges even with 1-inch sticking out at the top. Tuck this wicker strip securely into the basket.

    • 4

Take a larger piece of wicker and wrap it around the bottom of your lamp. Sew it onto your chandelier by passing a thinner piece of wicker around it.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 1 to 4 until you have four chandelier pieces of the same size.

    • 6

Take five wicker pieces and follow Steps 1 to 4 to create the base of your chandelier. You will want the base to be roughly 4 inches in height.

    • 7

Using a thin piece of wicker, weave the flat end of your chandelier candlesticks onto the 4-inch base.
