How to Determine the Width of a Pendant Light

Pendant lights are ideal for smaller spaces such as kitchen bars, islands and foyers. They come in various shapes, sizes and colors that can complement and brighten your room. Choosing a pendant size can be intimidating, but if you carefully consider the important factors in your room and space, determining the appropriate pendant size becomes much easier.

  Match the width of your pendant with the size of your foyer area. Do this by adding the length and width of your foyer and then change the sum's unit to inches. For example, if the area is 12-by-16-feet, then the sum is 28 feet. Change the unit to inches. which means the ideal width for your pendant is 28 inches.

  Consider the length of your table if you're installing pendants over it. Typically, pendant lights are hung from the ceiling in intervals of 2 to 3 feet from each other. If your table is 4 feet long, choose the pendant width so that no more than two pendants are hung above it. The total width of the pendants should be about 12 inches smaller than the table width.

  Select the shape and width of your pendant depending on its purpose. If you want the pendant light to disperse as it aims down, opt for a pendant shade with a bell-like shape that gets wider at the bottom. If you want a more direct and focus lighting for reading and other tasks, choose a narrower width such as pendant shades with sides that go straight down.
