How to Illuminate Your Ceilings

Lighting plays a large role in your home decorating. A bright lighting design helps you stay alert in the room and illuminates artwork or decorations, while a dimmer light design encourages relaxation and helps hide room blemishes such as cracks or wall stains. Your ceiling should not be ignored when decorating because it makes up a quarter of the surface space in any room. Illuminating your ceiling calls attention to it, and the ceiling reflects the light throughout the room.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the ceiling a light color. Light colors reflect more light than darker colors do and therefore respond to lighting better.

    • 2

Place ceiling lighting on the top of any beams across the ceiling if the room has some. The lighting is then hidden by the beam and is angled up to reflect off the ceiling while also providing lighting for the rest of the room.

    • 3

Plug in floor lamps that have a half-cone at the top of them. The cone helps direct the light upwards so it lights the ceiling without sending light directly into your eyes.

    • 4

Install a skylight. A skylight brings in sunlight through the ceiling that helps illuminate it naturally during the daytime.

    • 5

Hang a chandelier. The chandelier can be either hardwired into the room or you can run the power cable discreetly down a wall into a power outlet. The chandelier sends light upwards into the ceiling while also providing illumination for the rest of the room.
