Many recessed lighting systems feature reflective trims made of metallic material. These trims, available in gold or silver tone, fit around the edge of the recessed lighting cavity and often prove attention-getting, as the light can bounce off of them due to their reflective properties.
Some metallic trims are painted to match the room decor These trims are similar to the reflective trims, except they are coated with a layer of paint. Most painted trims come in a standard white; however, they can be easily painted to match the room decor with a simple can of spray paint. If you choose to paint your trim to suit your decor, unscrew it from the light fixture prior to painting and put it back into place upon completion.
For a more formal look, decorators can try a wood trim. Wood trims come in an assortment of wood tones intended to match the decorator’s wooden furnishings. Most of these trims resemble a round photo frame in design, protruding slightly from the recessed lighting cavity. While some of these trims are authentic wood, more are plywood covered in laminate.
Glass trims are also available to those seeking a more decorative lighting option. These trims feature rings of glass, often secured with metal screws or wires and organized in a modern and attractive style. In some cases, these glass trims protrude far out of the recessed lighting cavity, while in others, they are almost completely sunken into the cavity. Generally, these glass trims are an upgrade decorators could add to their lighting after installation, not a trim that comes with the original light fixtures.
