How to Make Frosted Lamp Globes Look Glazed or Antiqued

Chandeliers, pendant lights, floor lights and outdoor lights are just a few types of lights that use frosted glass globes. Traditional glass has a translucent surface that lets a large amount of light shine through. Frosted glass has a slightly milky coating that reduces the amount of light coming off the bulb. Adding a glazed look to the glass involves painting the glass with diluted paints. The paints give the frosted glass an antique look.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak the microfiber cloth with the rubbing alcohol. Rub the alcohol over all areas of the frosted glass, including the base, exterior and interior. The rubbing alcohol cleans off any debris or grease on the glass and naturally evaporates into the air.

    • 2

Arrange a layer of newspaper on a flat surface. Pour the entire bottle of glass paint into a plastic cup and add 1/4 teaspoon of water. Stir the mixture with a paintbrush and add more water if needed. The paint should retain its original color, but develop a more opaque tone.

    • 3

Paint the outside of the frosted globe with the diluted paint. Use a steady hand and avoid overlapping the paint, as it creates streaks. Completely paint the outside of the globe with the paint and let dry for several hours, or until the paint no longer feels tacky.

    • 4

Apply a layer of crackle paint to the globe, directly on top of the diluted paint. Depending on the type used, you may need to paint a second layer over the crackle coat. The paint slowly develops cracks, which gives the look of patina or aging.

    • 5

Coat the inside of the globes with a layer of diluted paint and crackle paint, if you want a more antiqued look. The frosting blocks the full-strength of the paint, but a small amount of color and crackling will still come through on the glass.
