DIY Edison Chandelier

Inspired by designer Adolf Loos, Pottery Barn’s Edison Chandelier has a minimalist look all its own. Rather than place light bulbs within gilded frames surrounded by colored glass or crystal pendants, the Edison Chandelier uses oversize light bulbs with visible filaments that hang from 46-inch cords. With the help of eye hooks placed into the ceiling, the long cords drape across part of the ceiling. Make sure all the items you use, except the bulbs, are the same color so you have a uniform look. It is best to install this chandelier where a light fixture already exists.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the cords of the cord sets so they measure 50 inches from the cut end to the bulb socket.

    • 2

Lay the cords on a table overnight so they flatten.

    • 3

Use a pencil to mark the area of your ceiling where you want to hang the eye hooks from the central light fixture. For a uniform look, place the eye hooks an equal distance from the middle of the chandelier and an equal distance from each other.

    • 4

Thread each cord set through an eye hook.

    • 5

Gather all the cords and place them into the cord bracket that will hang from the ceiling. Each cord should measure 46 inches from the bottom of the bracket.

    • 6

Use a cable tie to secure all the cords together so they do not slip away.

    • 7

Use the wire stripper on the end of a cut cord set so 3 inches of the black and white wires are exposed. Repeat on the rest of the cord sets.

    • 8

Strip the casing of the black wires. Group the black cords together and secure them with a cable tie where the electric wires are not exposed. Carefully twist the exposed black wires together. Repeat this process for the wires in the white casings.

    • 9

Turn off the power to the room or building from the main electrical panel.

    • 10

Remove the old light fixture and any wire nuts in place. Observe how the black and white wires in the old fixture are connected to the wires in the ceiling, because you will connect the chandelier’s black and white wires in the same manner.

    • 11

Attach the twisted black and white wires from the chandelier to the wires in the ceiling, using the wire nuts.

    • 12

Install the cord bracket according to the instructions that come with the packaging. The cord bracket should be large enough to cover the hole in your ceiling.

    • 13

Thread each eye hook through a washer and screw the eye hooks into the ceiling at the locations you marked.

    • 14

Slide the long cords through the eye hook so the sockets hang at the height you desire.

    • 15

Turn the power to the room on at the breaker panel.
