How to Install a Chandelier Light Wire

If you're planning on installing a new ceiling light fixture in your home, a chandelier can add a dramatic appearance to the room in which it's being installed. As with any electrical project, safety is key. This applies not only when you're working on the project, but also how you complete the project, as an appliance or fixture that is wired incorrectly can cause a fire or pose a shock hazard.

Instructions

Test the wiring that extends from the ceiling with a voltage tester. If you get a reading, turn off power to the circuit at your home's main electrical box. Skip this step if the chandelier is not replacing an existing fixture, as the wiring will not be attached to the main box yet.

Place the tips of the black wires together, and twist the bare tips of the wires together by giving them a couple of twists with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Place a plastic connector cap over the ends of the wires, and twist the cap on.

Place the tips of the white wires together, and twist the bare tips of the wires together by giving them a couple of twists with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Place a plastic connector cap over the ends of the wires, and continue to twist them together by twisting the cap.

Wrap the ground wire leading from the ceiling around the grounding screw on the chandelier, and tighten the screw. Connect the ground wires from the chandelier and cable inside the ceiling the same way you connected the other wires. Ground wires will be either bare or covered with green insulation.

Tuck the wiring into the electrical box inside the ceiling, and screw the canopy for the chandelier to the ceiling.
