How to Make a Henna Lamp

The Morrocan style lamps known as henna lamps get their name from the henna-tattooed shade of the lamp. Henna lampsm which can be found as table lamps, floor lamps or hanging orbs, are traditionally made from natural materials like dried goatskin. The thin leather of the lampshade diffuses the light of the lamp creating a soft glow. A table lamp can be made at home by piping henna paste onto leather and stretching the material around a lamp frame that sits over a candle.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the goatskin around the lamp frame. Mark the edges of each side of the frame with the pencil to designate the design boundaries for each shade side. Trim the goatskin with scissors to fit the height and width of the lamp frame.

    • 2

Lay the goatskin on a flat surface and, if thin enough, trace designs, using the pencil, as desired onto each shade section. Otherwise, use printed henna designs as a guide to draw the designs onto each shade section. Use numerous designs and patterns tightly packed into a space.

Prep the henna kit, according to directions. Pipe the henna paste onto the shade, according to the pencil-sketched designs. Pipe around the indicated frame edges to section off each shade side. Let dry completely.

Apply craft glue along the lamp frame edges. Wrap the henna-tattooed goatskin shade around the lamp frame edges. Apply pressure along the edges to secure. Let dry completely.
