How to Make a Pendant Fixture From a Lamp Shade

An old lampshade can provide the framework for a glamorous pendant fixture. Look for inexpensive used lampshades in thrift shops that have damaged fabric. Once the fabric is removed, you will use the shade’s wire frame, which will be embellished with hanging beads for the new pendant fixture. The finished pendant will hang from the ceiling over an existing ceiling light, delivering a glittery new lighting fixture that will glam up your dining room, hallway, powder room or bedroom.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all the fabric from the lampshade with the scissors, leaving a framework with one small round wire ring and one large round wire ring.

    • 2

Measure the circumference of the small wire circle and cut one piece of beaded trim to the measurement plus 1 inch. Plug in the hot glue gun and let the glue heat for 5 minutes.

    • 3

Apply a 2-inch section of hot glue to the small wire circle and press the top edge of the beaded trim to the glue firmly, positioning the fringe to hang away from the larger circle, which is the top of the pendant lighting fixture.

    • 4

Continue applying glue around the circle in 2-inch sections and firmly pressing the trim to the glue. Overlap the extra inch of trim and glue it in place.

    • 5

Measure and cut the trim to fit the larger wire circle, plus 1 inch, and attach it to the wire with the glue gun, directing the fringe ends toward the smaller circle.

    • 6

Hold the larger wire circle to the ceiling around the existing light fixture and mark three equally spaced spots with a pencil. Screw the cup hooks in the ceiling at the pencil marks. Hook the large wire circle of the completed pendant fixture over the cup hooks.
