How to Remove MR16 Bulbs

MR16 bulbs are 2-inch reflector bulbs used for a variety of lighting purposes -- including recessed lighting, spot lighting, track lighting and display lighting. These bulbs have a two-pin base and are available in several voltages and wattages. Some MR16 bulbs have cover glass, but others do not. You can find MR16 bulbs with beam spreads -- the width of the cone of light emitted -- ranging from 7 to 60 degrees. Unlike a standard light bulb, you do not twist an MR16 bulb to remove it.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the light switch that supplies power to the bulb. If the bulb was on, wait a few minutes for it to cool down, as it will be very hot.

    • 2

Remove the recessed can from the ceiling, if the MR16 bulb is in a recessed light. Grab the edge of the recessed can, and pull down with a slight twisting motion. The lighting fixture then hangs by a wire from the ceiling. Grab the ring that attaches the hanging light socket to the bulb, and pull the socket straight out to release the MR16 assembly.

    • 3

Place the fixture on a counter, with the two-pin base of the MR16 bulb facing up. Grab the base of the MR16 bulb, and pull it straight out of the lighting assembly.
