How to Hang Paper Lanterns Horizontally

Paper lanterns provide a festive look while softening the light in most rooms. Hanging paper lanterns horizontally helps to distribute light throughout a large space either in a room or on the patio. You can hang an arrangement horizontally and eliminate many of the extra plugs and switches if you attach them to string lights within reach of an electric outlet.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Push "S" hooks carefully through the tops of a lantern unless it already has a hanger attached. Round lanterns need three hooks, and square lanterns need four, one on each side.

    • 2

Attach invisible thread or fishing line to each hook on the paper lantern and pull the lines together at the top and tie a knot with all lines together. Add another "S" hook to the area where you tied your knot to create an almost-invisible hanger for each lantern.

    • 3

Secure one end of your string lights to the side of the house, a tree or a window frame near to the electric outlet. Fold small sections of about 4 inches each of the string lights in measured sections, securing each grouping with a rubber band. Allow several feet between each section depending on how far apart you want to space your paper lanterns. The size of the folded section should be short enough to fit down through the tops of your lanterns. For example, if you have a 12-inch strand of lights and three lanterns each being 6-inches long, fold the line every three feet to hang every three feet.

    • 4

Attach the other end of the strand of string lights across the room or yard to a stationary object to hang the lanterns horizontally.

    • 5

Hook each lantern by the top "S" hook to the folded section of string lights which project down into the lantern. Plug in and turn on the power and the small section of folded string lights provide illumination for each lantern, making a very festive and lovely decoration.
