How to Make a Sputnik Lamp

The Sputnik lamp is a modern lighting sensation which brings a burst of light with a Cold War styling. Giving a nod to the Russian satellite which was the first manmade object to orbit the earth, this lamp incorporates 10 lighting elements with 10 chrome balls to give a burst effect, which can be quite dazzling. This light can be hung in locations similar to chandeliers, such as rooms with tall ceilings, stairways and entryways. The stark metal appearance of the lamp contrasts well with the bright lights attached to the end of the poles.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert 1-inch conduit pipe halfway into a styrofoam ball. Wiggle the pipe back and forth until the cylinder of styrofoam which was cut by the conduit pipe breaks off.

    • 2

Drill a small hole into each Ping-Pong ball, being careful not to dent the ball. Put glue on the end of the stiff wire and insert one into each Ping-Pong ball. Put glue on the other end of the stiff wire and insert it into the styrofoam ball. Repeat for the other nine balls in haphazard arrangement around the ball.

    • 3

Poke a hole through the ball with a conduit pipe so there is a hole through into the 1-inch hole. Insert a pendant light cord through a 1/4-inch conduit pipe. Glue the pendant light to one end of the pipe. Pass the cord through the 1/4-inch hole and out the 1-inch hole. Put glue on the other end of the pipe and shove it into the styrofoam ball, plugging the 1/4-inch hole. Repeat for the other lights in a random arrangement.

    • 4

Pass the five cables through the 1-inch conduit piping. Put glue on the end of the conduit and slide it back into the styrofoam ball, plugging the 1-inch hole. Spray paint the entire assembly chrome and let sit for four hours. Apply a second coat.
