Chandelier Installation With Swag

Hang chandeliers anywhere you would like in your home, without worrying about the ceiling being wired for light in the area. Swag chandeliers get their name from the long cords that can be looped in a swag across the ceiling and then down the wall to the closest outlet. Swag chandeliers are also a good choice for renters, as they require only a small amount of hardware to hang and are simple to remove. With a swag chandelier, you can add overhead light to a dark area of the living room, center a statement light over the dining room table, add a romantic light in the bedroom or infuse some luxury into the bathroom.
  1. Selecting the Proper Place

    • Locating the proper place to hang your swag chandelier is the first step in proper installation. Begin by determining the weight of the chandelier. For heavy lights, it is often appropriate to hang the piece from a ceiling beam, which helps add extra support. Use a stud finder to locate the closest stud to the area where you want the light to hang. Mark the point where the chandelier will hang with a pencil.

    Choosing and Installing the Hooks

    • The chandelier’s weight will also be important when choosing the proper hooks for hanging it. Most hardware and home improvement stores carry several types of hooks. Use a hook appropriate for the weight of the chandelier. Two hooks are required for this project. Screw a hook into the ceiling in the place you previously marked with a pencil. Some hooks may be screwed into the ceiling by hand and others require the use of a cordless drill and screws. Screw the second hook into the ceiling where the ceiling meets the wall on which the outlet is located.

    Hanging the Chandelier

    • Before you hang the swag chandelier, it is important to analyze how your light should be hung. Some feature a loop on top of the light from which it is supposed to hang. Others require a chain to be threaded through a bracket at the top of the chandelier. Once the hanging procedure has been determined, thread the cord through the top of the chandelier. Hang the loop or chain over the ceiling hook. Thread the cord over the hook and toward the second hook. Thread the cord over the second hook. If necessary, use a bit of floral wire twisted around the cord and the second hook to anchor it in place. Plug in the cord.

    Camouflaging the Cord

    • Some swag lights come with a long, fabric tube that can be used to help hide the cord. Thread the cord through the tube, bunching up the fabric as you go. You may also create your own camouflage for the cord by sewing your own fabric cord. Choose fabric that coordinates to the colors used in the chandelier and the room. Cut a tube about 6 inches wide and about 1 foot longer than the cord. Pin the edges together to create a tube and sew along the pinned edge.
