How to Make a Chandelier From a Fence

Creating your own pieces of home decor can be as simple as re-purposing a few items you already have around your house such as a metal splatter guard and a length of wire garden fencing. By manipulating these items, you can create a simple yet attractive chandelier to hang in the house or your outdoor patio. This project is relatively easy to complete and, once finished, you will have an interesting piece of home decor that no one else will have.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a round metal splatter guard on a flat surface in front of you. The splatter guard will serve as the base for your chandelier and its diameter will determine the size of your chandelier. The larger the splatter guard you select, the larger your chandelier will be.

    • 2

Bend a length of wire garden fencing into a tube shape using the splatter guard as a guide. You may choose whatever style garden fencing you like but it may be best to select a type that is less than 12 inches tall. Then fencing should not be a solid sheet of metal otherwise the light inside the chandelier will not be visible.

    • 3

Cut the wire garden fencing using wire cutters or tin snips to the appropriate size and secure the cut ends to each other using fine-gauge wire to close the tube shape.

    • 4

Place the tube of wire garden fencing on top of the metal splatter guard. If you desire, slide the splatter guard part way up into the tube so the decorative bottom edge of the fencing is more visible.

    • 5

Attach the metal splatter guard to the tube of wire garden fencing by threading pieces of fine-gauge wire through the holes in the splatter guard and securing them to the fencing.

    • 6

Attach four large metal jump rings to the top of the tube of garden fencing, spacing them equally around the circle. If the fencing is too thick to accommodate a jump ring, wrap a piece of thick wire into a loop around the top of the fencing in each of the four desired positions and twist the ends to close the loop.

    • 7

Fill several mason jars with one to two inches of sand and drop a tea candle into each of the jars, pressing them gently into the sand. Arrange the mason jars on top of the metal splatter guard within the tube of garden fencing. When lit, the candles inside the mason jars will act as the light source for your chandelier.

    • 8

Slip a metal S-hook onto either each of the four jump rings or wire loops at the top of the chandelier. Attach the ends of two equal-length pieces of metal chain to the S-hooks on opposite sides of the chandelier so the two pieces of chain cross above the center of the chandelier. The length of the chains will determine the height at which your chandelier hangs so to make the chandelier hang lower, use longer pieces of chain.

    • 9

Slip the middle of both pieces of metal chain over one end of a large metal S-hook. Slide the other end of the S-hook onto a ring or hook mounted in the ceiling to hang your chandelier in the desired position.
