How to Build a Shed Chandelier

Most of us look at the shed as a utilitarian shelter for housing yard equipment, holiday decorations, porch furniture and other items. However, a shed could become a usable studio, workshop or general place of creativity with a few simple additions. One of the quickest ways to transform your shed is with the addition of interesting, creative lighting. A chandelier instantly elevates a shed into a space in which you wish to spend more time. Using unexpected, rustic materials to create your chandelier helps prevent the light source from feeling too out of place inside a shed.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the broom over the rake handle to create a X shape. Use twine to tightly tie the two pieces together.

    • 2

Fit your drill with the ¼ inch drill bit. Drill through the center of the X shape, where the broom and the rake meet one another. Place the flange bolt into the hole. Fit the drill with the screwdriver bit. Screw the bolt in place. Screw the nut onto the bottom of the bolt.

    • 3

Carefully screw eye bolts into the ends of the broom handle and the rake. Screw two on each end so one faces up and the other faces down. Also screw eye bolts into the top and the bottom of the opposite side of the rake and broom handles. Screw them in place just above the broom or rake head.

    • 4

Determine how low the chandelier should hang from the ceiling. Cut four pieces of thin rope about 3 inches longer than the desired height of the chandelier. Tie one piece of rope to one of the eye bolts, facing up. Repeat with the remaining three sides.

    • 5

Apply two or three self-adhesive strips to the shafts of the broom and rake handles. Apply them to different sides and areas of the broom handles. Carefully wrap the rope lights around the handles. Press the lights to the self-adhesive strips to secure them in place.

    • 6

Cut four pieces of fishing line about 12 inches long. Take one piece of the fishing line and tie it to one of the eye bolts, facing down. Repeat with the remaining pieces of fishing line and eye bolts.

    • 7

Cut four pieces of fishing line about 8 inches long. It may be necessary to cut longer pieces of fishing line depending on the width of your jar’s mouth. Wrap the wire around the mouth of the jar. Twist the ends of the wire to form a loop. Tie each loop to a piece of fishing line.

    • 8

Screw the screw in hooks to the ceiling of the shed. For sheds with metal roofs, use self-adhesive hooks. Tie loops in the ends of the ropes attached to the chandelier. Fit a loop over each of the hooks.

    • 9

Place pillar candles into each of the jars. If necessary, place self-adhesive strips across the ceiling and the walls to the nearest outlet. Press the cord from the rope lights to the self-adhesive strips to keep it from falling down. Plug in or turn on the rope lights and turn on the battery operated candles.
