How to Make a Chandelier From a Candelabra

The only difference between a candelabra and a chandelier is that the chandelier is suspended in air, making the even suspension of the candelabra the main step in the transformation of one to the other. Workable materials for suspension of the candelabra include rope, wire, wrought iron and chain. A nonflammable material should be used for this purpose, and while any of these materials may be used, chain is recommended due to its reliability, ease of installation, visual appeal and ability to be adjusted.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a stud finder to locate the studs in the ceiling where the candelabra will be hung. Mark the location of each stud and choose a hanging position with a stud directly above it. Drill a hole into the stud, making sure the drill bit strikes the wood and using a drill bit with a diameter that is just smaller than the diameter of your 1-inch eye hook threads.

    • 2

Fasten a 1-inch eye hook to the hole drilled in the ceiling by setting the eye hook in the hole and rotating the head of the eye hook clockwise. Insert a screwdriver blade into the eye hook if tightening by hand becomes difficult. Continue to tighten until the top of the hole is even with the ceiling.

Open a 1-inch carabiner and pass it through the eye hook. Pass the end link of a length of chain for each attachment point on the candelabra through the 1-inch carabiner and rotate the lock to close it. Pass a 3/4-inch carabiner over each section of the candelabra that will be supporting a chain, looking for places where the carabiner will not shift position and the chain will not come into contact with the candle flame. Attach each 3/4-inch carabiner to a length of chain hanging down from the ceiling.

Adjust the height of the individual chain lengths to make the candelabra level. Open the 3/4-inch carabiner of the chain that must be adjusted and detach the chain link from the carabiner. Attach the next higher or lower link on the chain to the carabiner and reevaluate the levelness of the candelabra. Repeat until the candelabra hangs level.
