How to Change a Recessed Lighting Baffle

Recessed light fixtures are designed to be used with a variety of recessed trims. Installing recessed lighting trims help make recessed fixtures more versatile. Open trims create wide light patterns, eyeball trims direct light to specific locations, shielded trims can create a wall wash effect, while a baffle trims help reduce glare by deflecting the light down from the ceiling. Different colors and finishes of baffles are available, allowing you to change the appearance of the lights in your ceiling when repainting or redecorating.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the light switch supplying power to the recessed light, or turn off the breaker at the circuit panel that operates the recessed lighting circuit.

    • 2

Untwist the light bulb from the recessed lighting socket to remove the bulb.

    • 3

Grasp one of the small springs connected to the top of the baffle with your fingers. Unhook the spring from the interior of the recessed fixture. The recessed fixture has several slots and holes in the wall of the fixture that the spring can connect to. Remove the remaining spring in the same manner.

    • 4

Insert a new baffle into the recessed fixture. Connect the small springs attached to the top of the baffle to any opening in the wall of the fixture. Move the springs around to other openings if the opening you choose does not hold the baffle flush against the ceiling.

    • 5

Replace the light bulb in the recessed light socket. Turn on the light switch to the recessed light, or turn on the recessed lighting breaker at the circuit panel.
