How to Build a Square Wooden Lampshade Frame

Home improvement stores carry lampshades in different shapes, sizes and colors. If you have a specific look in mind, though, you may not be able to find it premade. Instead of giving up on your decorating vision, create your own lampshade. For example, if you want a square lampshade, make a frame out of pieces of wood. Construction requires few carpentry skills, and the finished product can be covered in your choice of fabrics.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut 13 pieces of 1/2-by-1/2-inch pine to 12 inches long. Sand the edges to remove any splinters or rough edges, using medium-grit sandpaper.

    • 2

Place two pieces of wood on your work surface so they're parallel to each another and spaced 12 inches apart. Place two more pieces of wood perpendicular to the first two to create a square.

    • 3

Adjust the placement of the four wood pieces to ensure the corners are flush and squared. Apply wood glue where the pieces meet. Secure by placing one nail in each corner, using a hammer or nail gun.

    • 4

Repeat steps 2 and 3 to create a second square.

    • 5

Position one of the completed squares flat on your work surface. Place one of the remaining pieces of wood on one of the corners of the square. Position it perpendicular to the square so it stands upright at a 90-degree angle. Square up the corners of the square and the piece of wood and secure in place with wood glue and a nail. Repeat the process with the three other corners of the square and three more pieces of wood so you have a square with four legs sticking up.

    • 6

Place the second square on top of the four legs to create an open-sided box. Square up the corners of the wood. Apply wood glue where the pieces meet. Secure the square using one more nail through each corner into the legs.

    • 7

Drill a 1/2-inch hole in the center of the last wood piece. Apply wood glue and insert the piece of wood between two parallel wood strips on one side of the square. Flush the edges and sit the new piece of wood directly in the center of the square’s side. Put one nail through each side of the square into the new piece of wood to create a hanging apparatus. Let the glue dry for 24 hours.

Insert the screw end of a clip-on apparatus through the hole in the wood. Twist a nut onto the end of the screw to secure the apparatus. Cover the frame as desired.
