Removing the Casing From Recessed Lighting

Recessed lights are embedded into the ceiling so they illuminate the space without detracting from the decor. Lighting models vary in design, but most include a metal casing that sits between the bulb and the housing. It is necessary to remove this casing to access the wiring or replace the unit. It takes some effort to pop out the casing because it is secured with a spring clip. As you pull down, the spring tightens. In order to remove the piece, the spring must come free.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the recessed lights so you can tell when the power shuts down then go to the household circuit panel. Switch the breaker for the lights to the "Off" position. Give the lights time to cool down before continuing.

    • 2

Climb up a ladder, if necessary, to access the recessed light. Remove the bulb by turning it counterclockwise until it comes free.

    • 3

Slide a flat head screwdriver under the edge of the casing and pull downward to create a gap between the casing and the ceiling. Push your fingers under the edge and pull down until the casing comes out.
