How to Hang Light Fixtures Without Bolt Straps

The majority of light fixtures mount to the ceiling using a metal bolt strap that stretches across the opening of the ceiling outlet box. However, some types of lights do not mount using the strap method, but instead screw onto a center post that extends from the ceiling box. Hanging a light fixture using the post method requires only that you install the proper type of metal box and then screw special adaptors onto the post to hang the light.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off all of the electricity to the room at the main breaker before proceeding with installing the light fixture.

    • 2

Set up a ladder under the light fixture area, if required, so that you can safely place both hands on the ceiling.

    • 3

Climb up and expand the ceiling hole using a drywall saw until it is large enough so you can reach two ceiling joists. Insert one of the outlet box mounting brackets against the left joist and secure it using the provided screws. Install an identical mounting bracket on the right joist.

    • 4

Slide the ceiling box loop onto the hanging bar or rod and place the ends of the rod into the mounting brackets so it is secure. Slide the outlet box to the final desired location on the rod and tighten the lock nut above it to hold it in place.

    • 5

Screw a hickey onto the end of the center post in the outlet box.

    • 6

Screw a locknut onto a nipple, which is a threaded post. Screw the other end of the locknut onto the post in the ceiling fixture.

    • 7

Slide the light fixture hole up over the nipple and push the cone-shaped collar up to the ceiling to hold it in place. Screw the lower nut or cap from the light fixture onto the end of the nipple to hold the collar in place.
