Size of Recessed Kitchen Floodlights

Sizing

• A 6-inch can is the most common size for kitchens and larger spaces that need floodlighting. If your kitchen is somewhat small, a smaller can may be preferable. A 4-inch can is usually only used for accent or task lighting. Any can size is appropriate for your kitchen lighting, as long as the lights are placed with proper distances between them.

Types

• Once you know the best size for your recessed lighting, you can choose from a variety of style options. The trim ring may be composed of a variety of materials, including white polymer, black aluminum, brushed nickel and antique bronze. The light may be installed in a set recessed position, or it may be an "eyeball" style with 360 degrees of positioning. Slotted, lensed and decorative styles are a few of the options available.

Bulbs

• The type of bulb you select for your lighting can greatly affect the overall ambiance created. Common household bulbs, or Standard A, are warm incandescent lights and are the most affordable option. They require a reflector to boost the light. R lamps have a built-in reflector and shed incandescent light in spots or flood patterns. Halogen PAR lamps create a controlled beam and are whiter and brighter than the incandescent lights.

Installation

• Recessed lighting can provide a sleek lighting style for the whole kitchen area. Do not place the lights too close together. Six-inch cans should be about 7 feet apart in a standard 8-foot-high ceiling home. You can set up task lights above countertops by installing recessed lights on the bottom of your kitchen cabinets. Whenever you're placing task lighting, locate it so that your head will not block the light. Do not install recessed lighting if your ceiling is made of concrete or delicate molding plasterwork; a chandelier or conventional ceiling light is best in these cases.
