How to Change Recessed Lighting Covers

Recessed lights are nothing more than light bulbs in a tin can. The light itself is fairly unattractive. To hide this unattractiveness, manufacturers place a cover over the can. This cover is often referred to as trim work and it is secured to the lighting can by two or more clips. There are no screws or fasteners to contend with, but the clips are hidden making the removal of these covers less obvious.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the lights and stand on a stepladder to access the recessed light.

    • 2

Unscrew the light bulb from the recessed light. Make sure the bulb is cool before you touch it.

    • 3

Wedge the tip of a flathead screwdriver in between the cover and the recessed lighting can.

    • 4

Pull down on the cover using the screwdriver until a gap is created between the cover and lighting can.

    • 5

Wedge around the cover until you find the clips holding the cover in place. Then dislodge the clips with the force of your hands or the tip of the screwdriver. This releases the cover from the light fixture.
