Installing Recessed Lighting Wires

Recessed lighting is a light or series of lights that are placed inside the ceiling, as opposed to hanging down from the ceiling as other light fixtures do. You can use the recessed lights to provide additional lighting in areas of a room that do not receive enough light from hanging light fixtures, table or floor lamps, or to highlight features in the room such as a painting. When installing the lights, it's important to install the wiring correctly in order to prevent electrical shock or fires.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the junction box attached to the lighting can.

    • 2

Slide the electrical cable from the ceiling into the junction box and secure it with the cable connector. This is a clip on the box which locks the cable into place to prevent it from moving.

Join the black wire from the light to the black wire from the electrical cable by placing the bare ends of the wires together and twisting them a couple of times with a pair of pliers. Place a plastic connector cap onto the wires, and twist them together several more times.

Join the white wire from the light to the white wire from the electrical cable by placing the bare ends of the wires together and twisting them a couple of times with a pair of pliers. Place a plastic connector cap onto the wires, and twist them together several more times.
