Neon Lighting for Rooms

General Information

• Neon lights provide lighting in bright colors, such as hot pink, lime green, ocean blue, purple and bright orange. Primary colors are also available, such as red and yellow. Neon lights come in a variety of shapes, including in the shape of a bulb, rectangle, star or the image of your choice.

Applications

• Neon lighting can come in many forms that are conducive to use in a room. Table lamps, pendant lights and floor lamps in a wavy pattern lend themselves to use with neon lights. Some contemporary sconces also have neon lights in them. Neon uplights can be placed in an inconspicuous location and flood a narrow area with neon light. Signs and clocks can also feature neon lights. Glow sticks provide inexpensive neon lighting that can be placed in most locations in your room. Neon rope lights are another option to cover a larger area with neon lights.

Bar

• Hang a neon sign over the bar area or hang rope lights around it. A neon sign with the name of your favorite beverage company is also appropriate here. Place lights on bar shelves to make the glasses stand out. A string of neon lights at the entryway creates a transition between the rest of the home and the bar area. Add a black light to the room if you want the neon colors to stand out more.

Game Rooms

• Hang a neon sign over the pool table. Place glow sticks or neon rope lights around other game tables. Place lights inside of entertainment centers to illuminate the area. A neon dart board provides a place to play and valuable lighting. Hang a neon sign with your favorite team logo.

Other Rooms

• Hang a neon sign with your child's name on it behind his bed for a customized headboard. Neon lights placed near the baseboard can help a child easily find his way out of the room during a nighttime bathroom run. Assemble a group of glow sticks in an artistic manner to make a feature wall. Add neon lights around a mirror to make a light-up vanity area. Neon lights inside closets, alcoves and high storage areas provide lighting to these darker spaces. A doorway or window can provide a practical location for neon lights. Small lights can be added to a tray ceiling to emphasize the architecture of the room.

Considerations

• Small children may be overstimulated by neon lights. Opt for neon lights that have some type of off switch so you can turn them off. Using too many neon lights in a small room can quickly overwhelm the space, so try to use the neon lights in a few key areas, rather than all over the room.
