Redoing a Turned-Wood Lamp Base

Turned-wood lamps are a beautiful accent lighting piece for any style of home. If you have a turned-wood lamp or find one that can be reclaimed, you may want to redo it to match your decor. Wood is not difficult to refinish. The key is to prepare the existing surface to allow the new finish to adhere properly. Select a finish similar to an accent or trim color in the room where you plan to use the lamp.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the lamp on a work surface. Unscrew the lampshade knob with your fingers, and remove the lampshade. Set the lampshade aside. Unscrew the light bulb, and set it aside.

    • 2

Crumple a sheet of newspaper, and stuff it inside the lamp socket. Tape the metal parts of the lamp fixture with masking tape so that only the base is exposed.

    • 3

Sand the lamp base with a fine-grit sanding pad. Use the pad to get into all of the detailed areas of the lamp base. Sand the base carefully until the entire finish is dulled. The dulled surface allows the new finish to adhere properly.

    • 4

Wipe off any dust left from sanding with a tack cloth.

    • 5

Apply a coat of wood finish using a small paintbrush. Allow the finish to dry for at least 4 hours and apply a second coat. Wait at least 24 hours for the finish to dry.

    • 6

Remove the masking tape and newspaper. Screw in the light bulb, and replace the lampshade.
