Do-It-Yourself Wet Bar

A wet bar enhances the entertainment area of your home by creating a drink center for guests. A countertop with a small bar sink is the primary component of a wet bar, but you can also add a mini refrigerator and storage space. The small-scale nature of the wet bar makes it a do-it-yourself possibility for homeowners who are handy with tools. A solid wet bar design is essential before you start building the drink area.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the location of the wet bar, taking into consideration the existing plumbing availability in the area. Tapping into lines that are already in the area is much easier than rerouting plumbing to the area. Measure the area's width and depth, so you are able to construct the wet bar to fit the area.

    • 2

Install a vinyl or tile floor around the bar area, if the room doesn't already have a similar flooring material. This protects the floor from spills that are likely to occur near the wet bar.

    • 3

Install stock base cabinetry to create the base of the wet bar. The stock cabinetry makes the construction simple and provides storage space underneath.

    • 4

Install a piece of stock countertop cut to size on top of the base cabinets to create the top of the bar. Cut a hole for the bar sink in the countertop, using a jigsaw. Make a template and cut out the hole.

    • 5

Line the underside edge of the sink with silicone caulk to create a seal. Position the sink in the hole, making sure it is even and level.

    • 6

Tap into existing plumbing that runs behind the wet bar to connect the sink to the plumbing. If you aren't familiar with plumbing, hire a licensed plumber to run the lines to avoid leaks and major damage. You will also likely need to hire a plumber if no existing water lines run near the wet bar.

Build shelving above the countertop for additional storage of bottles, glasses and other bar tools. Attach a glass hanging rack to the underside of the shelves if desired.
