How to Camouflage a Compact Freezer

While a small freezer may come in handy for extra food storage, the boxy appliance can be an eyesore in your dorm room, office or kitchen. Rather than stuffing it in a small closet and creating a potential fire hazard, hide it in plain sight. With the right companion furniture and a coat of paint, you can camouflage your compact freezer so that it blends in with your decor.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of the freezer. Get two pieces of wood furniture the same height as the freezer such as bookcases, cabinets or night stands. When matched with your freezer and painted the same color, the wood furniture resembles a storage unit and the freezer becomes less noticeable.

    • 2

Remove the freezer's and furniture's removable hardware such as handles, knobs and hinges. Place the items in a well-ventilated area protected with drop cloths.

    • 3

Sand the freezer surface until it is dull. A slightly roughened surface gives paint something to which it can adhere. Sand the furniture with a fine grit sand paper. Wipe the furniture and freezer down with a damp rag to remove the dust before you start painting.

    • 4

Place painter's tape on the areas you want to protect from paint. Spray the wood furniture with a primer and allow it to dry. Primer prevents porous wood surfaces from absorbing paint, which results in splotchy finishes. Do not prime the freezer because it is not porous.

Spray paint the furniture and compact freezer with an enamel spray suitable for metal surfaces. Using the same paint allows you to match colors perfectly, which helps the furniture and freezer look like a single, cohesive unit. While most types of paint adhere to wood, not all adhere to non-porous, metal surfaces. Paints made for metal are specifically designed to adhere to such surfaces, but can be used to paint wood as well.
