How Much Overhang on a Counter for Bar Stools?

A counter overhang refers to how much a kitchen island or bar counter ledge extends out over the counter structure itself. Overhangs come in many different widths, but how deep your overhang is can be important when the time comes to pick out the right bar stools. Your stool selection should always be appropriate to the type of overhang you have, and vice-versa.
  1. Typical Overhangs

    • The typical counter overhang for many kitchens is between 8 and 10 inches. With an overhang this wide, you can incorporate nearly any type of chair or bar stool. This also dodges the custom work necessary to adjust the overhang, which can add extra costs onto your counter installation. However, this typical size may not give much room for knees, or may require the bar stools to be pulled out in order to use them comfortably.

    Deep Overhangs

    • If you know that you will be using bar stools and want to create counters to match the stools, then go with a deeper overhang. An overhang that extends 12 to 16 inches will provide the necessary room for feet and knees without anyone bumping against the counter back. This type of overhang may be more expensive or difficult to install, but works better with bar stools.

    Overhang vs. Stool Height

    • If you have a choice in bar stool height, make sure the stool matches the overhang. In general, the smaller the overhang, the more comfortable a lower bar stool height will be. For example, if you have an overhang of only 6 inches, you may want to downgrade your 32-inch stool by a few inches for greater comfort.

    Design Flexibility and Considerations

    • No steady rule exists for overhangs versus bar stools. Comfort and style are the most important features. For example, you may want a long overhang to hide backless bar stools under to provide more moving room. On the other hand, a short overhang can provide space to show off more ornate bar stools. Overhangs can also give you more or less room for countertop cooking and activities.
