How to Install Punched Tin to a Door

Punched tin is a vintage craft that consists of tin sheets punched with sharp tools to create holes that form patterns. One of the most prevalent uses of punched tin was pie safes, where the punched holes provided ventilation for stored pies and other baked items. Today, punched tin is largely decorative. Create a modern craft and a nostalgic conversation piece by attaching punched tin to one or more of your cabinet doors.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a punched tin panel that will fit on the front of your cabinet door. Choose one that leaves a uniform perimeter of the cabinet door exposed for framing.

    • 2

Cut four strips of wood molding to create a frame that will be used to enclose the raw edges of the tin panel. Measurements will vary depending on the sizes of the tin panel and the cabinet door. Allow for the outer perimeter of the frame to fit the outer perimeter of the door. Plan for the inner edge of the frame to overlap the raw edges of the tin panel by at least half an inch.

    • 3

Miter the corners of the frame by using a miter saw. The corners can also be cut with a hand saw.

    • 4

Glue the frame joints together with carpenter's glue and clamp the joints with miter clamps until the glue dries, about 24 hours.

    • 5

Paint the frame as desired and let it dry completely.

    • 6

Turn the frame over and attach the tin panel to the back of the frame with tacks. Make sure the right side of the tin panel faces outward, the same way the front of the frame faces. The rough back of the tin panel should be facing the same way as the back of the frame.

Attach the frame to the cabinet door with finishing nails. Countersink the nails with a nail set, then cover the nail indentations with caulk or wood filler and paint or stain over them.
