How to Hang a Screened Bed in the Porch

Screened beds are sometimes hanging beds: beds designed to be suspended from the ceiling. Like a porch swing, the beds can be hung from ceiling beams, joists and trusses. Even if a hanging bed is not screened, you can hang it on a screened-in porch, and relax while keeping bugs away.

Things You'll Need

  • Stud finder
  • Marker
  • Measuring tape
  • Drill
  • Weight-bearing eye hooks (4)
  • Heavy chain links (or heavy ropes if they come with the hanging bed)

Instructions

    • 1

Visually inspect the trusses, support beams or joists on the ceiling of the porch. Ensure they are stable and free from rot as this can be a sign of structural damage.

    • 2

Turn on your stud finder and slowly move the finder across the ceiling surface to find the beams, if the beams are hidden under panels or wood. Use a marker to mark where the beams are under the ceiling. Make sure the markings help show which way the beams run and space between them.

    • 3

Measure the length and width of the bed using a measuring tape. Use these measurements to determine the spacing between each eye hook. After measuring the bed itself, measure the same length and width on the ceiling. Use a marker to mark the spot of each hook on the ceiling, where the length and width meet. You should have four marks total. Ensure the marks are in the center of a joist or beam for stability.

    • 4

Drill a hole for each hook. Fully tighten each eye hook into a hole. Use a hammer to gently tap it fully in place if it becomes stuck.

    • 5

Connect the chain links or ropes that came with the hanging bed to the hooks on each corner of the bed. Connect the other end to the eye hooks. If using ropes, use double or triple knots to secure the ropes. Adjust the length as needed before fully tightening the chains or ropes. The bed should hang a few inches to one foot above the floor.
