Instructions

    • 1

Decide the appropriate height for the newel and measure it from the tread. Add an additional 6 1/4 inches to the measurement, then mark it on the newel. Measure from the top. Follow local codes for the handrail height to determine the newel height. The top of the newel is usually at least 3 or 4 inches higher than the handrail, but you can cut it to match the height or to be higher.

    • 2

Cut the newel to the appropriate length with a metal cutting saw, if necessary. Cut from the bottom.

    • 3

Find the centerpoint on the edge of the tread, where you'll install the newel. Move over 2 1/2 to 3 inches from the edge of the thread. Use the tape measure to find the halfway measurement of the tread from the front to the back. Mark the area, then draw a 1 1/2-inch square around the point.

    • 4

Cut the square out with a jigsaw.

    • 5

Insert the newel mounting sleeve into the hole that you cut.

    • 6

Mark the sleeve's four screw holes, then remove the newel.

    • 7

Drill the four screw holes into the tread by using a 3/16-inch drill bit.

    • 8

Connect the newel collar over the newel pipe and line up the three holes on each piece.

    • 9

Insert a screw into each hole, and then tighten them into place by using an Allen wrench.

    • 10

Replace the newel into the hole in the tread, then drive the mounting screws into place.

    • 11

Allow the mounting collar to rest on top, covering the mounting screws. You can apply an adhesive to the rim of the mounting collar if you desire.

    • 12

Repeat the process for each stair tread.
