How to Divide a Basement With Sliding Glass Doors

A sliding door allows you to divide your basement into separate areas while retaining the ability to open up the space. It also allows you to use space more effectively than a swing door. The glass in the door can be clear or etched to make it more opaque, giving each side of the partition a sense of privacy. Sliding doors work on tracks, and the simplest method is to hang them from a track above. Most basements have accessible beams to which you can attach the track.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the brackets with the wheels to the top of the glass doors by lining up the ready-made holes and screwing the brackets to the door with the screwdriver. They will be marked, with specific brackets for specific doors, as sliding doors move past one another and so sit on different lips of the track.

    • 2

Mark on the ceiling beam with a pencil where you want the track to sit. Either hold the track up to the beam and mark through the holes, or measure the distance between the holes on the track while it is on the ground and then mark these distances on the beam.

Screw the track to the beam. You may need to drill holes in the beam first on the pencil marks you made in the previous step. If required, put in shims and test for a true level. Shims are short pieces of tapered wood that you can hammer into any gaps between the track and the beam to elevate part of the track so that it remains plumb. Cut off the ends of the shims so that they are level with the edge of the track.

Enlist a friend to help you lift the doors onto the tracks. The wheels of one door will fit on one lip of the track and the wheels of the other on the second lip. This allows the doors to slide past one another when opening them up.
