Ideas to Make a Studio Apartment Private

Living in a studio apartment can be a little challenging --- especially when it comes to privacy. The open space makes it difficult to separate sleeping quarters, living room and dining spaces. However, with a few good ideas, you can conquer the privacy issues and create individual areas for specific purposes.
  1. Wine Bookcase Wall

    • You don't have to spend a lot of money to put up a wall in your studio apartment that gives you a lot of privacy and a good amount of storage. Visit your local home improvement or discount department store and look for a simple bookcase or modular cube storage units. Place the unit between your sleeping area and living room, paint it to match your decor, then fill it up with wine or books and enjoy the instant privacy.

    Shoji Screen Sliding Panels

    • Sliding Shoji screen panels have long been a way to section off a room in many Asian cultures. The appeal of the Shoji screen is that it is lightweight and visually pleasing and separates living spaces while still allowing a moderate amount of light to come through the screen material. You can also use the same ceiling track hanging design with a more solid material if you desire a more private environment.

    Bamboo Divider

    • Whether it is a freestanding unit or hanging ceiling-mounted roller shade, a bamboo divider is a casual and extremely inexpensive way to divide up space in an open floor plan studio apartment. Visit your local home improvement center and you can score a hanging shade large enough to go ceiling to floor and cover a 6-foot width starting at about $75. Or you can build a simple trough-like floor planter, fill it with insulation foam and stand the bamboo in the box to create a freestanding room divider.

    Folding Screen

    • One of the most versatile pieces of furniture you will ever own is a folding screen. A basic wooden screen can be stained, painted or stenciled to match any decor and can be repainted anytime to change with the seasons. Use a folding screen to section off the area beside or in front of your bed to create a mobile privacy wall for your sleeping quarters. Or you can use the screen as a headboard when privacy is no longer an issue.
