How to Arrange More Seating in a Small Lunchroom

If you're hosting a dinner party with extra guests, or you're just trying to accommodate a growing family, you may discover limited space around your lunchroom table. If you need more space but can't knock down walls to create extra room, consider re-thinking the layout of the furniture. Some quick tips and creative thinking can make it so everyone has a seat for the meal but no one feels cramped or crowded. And, of course, everyone will be able to reach the food.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider switching out your dining table for a round or square one, which will let you put more people at each side than a traditional rectangular table.

    • 2

Remove chairs from the table and replace with benches. Benches take up less room than bulky chairs and more people can slide onto a bench.

    • 3

Place a small folding table at one corner of the room when you have extra company for lunch. Cover with a tablecloth if you want it to blend in.

    • 4

Remove any furniture in the dining area that doesn't allow for seating. Things like buffet tables and china cabinets can go so there's room to sit.

    • 5

Set food out in the kitchen and let people make their plates there buffet style. This will ensure the whole table is free of food and can fit more people seated around it.
